Biography

James "Jimmy Jam" Graham and Robert "Bobby Tarzwell" Shefferly, met at Central Michigan University in 1981. We both played guitar a bit and just started writing and recording songs on a cassette player. Pretty soon we were recording full albums and started calling ourselves Spare Parts. Once we graduated in 1984, we still kept writing and recording. We were not very good, and pretty poor vocalists, so no one really heard our music but ourselves. But we were having a lot of fun. In 2006, we hooked up with a great vocalist and a great guitarist and recorded an album called "46 and Holding". It actually sounded good! We meant to have a follow up album, but life just seemed to get in the way. In late 2025, Jimmy Jam discovered SUNO accidentally. A long story made short, he was able to upload all the old cassette albums from 1981-2006 and run it through SUNO. There were no prompts, in other words, we wanted SUNO to interpret what we were doing. The result was amazing. Each truly sounded like what we had envisioned all those years ago. The result were 4 Anthology Albums (College Parts 1981-1985, Work Parts 1985-1993, Family Parts 1994-2005, Rusty Parts 2006-2025, and Extra Parts 1981-2026). WE changed our name to Spare Parts 81 to differentiate from the other bands called Spare Parts. We also did our first Christmas Album "A Spare Parts Christmas" and then released an album of brand new songs called "Island Shamming" and then Random Parts I and II. While we use AI to add vocals and instruments, every lyric has been written by Bob or I, and a few by family or friends. All of our music is now streaming on all platforms and we are excited to have our music played on Pure AI Radio.
